Waterproofing Plaza Decks

Waterproofing Plaza Decks

Structures that people, plants, and animals use which are above an occupied area are referred to as plaza decks.  Examples of such areas include many sidewalks and roadways that are over underground parking garages.  These structures will have to deal with moisture from above caused by watering plants, spilled drinks, and various weather patterns as well as moisture problems common to all below grade structures.  Therefore, it is important that special consideration be taken when waterproofing these structures.

The freeze/thaw cycle can cause serious damage for plazas so it is important to keep moisture from getting into the structure in the first place.  The area above ground as well as the area in below grade areas will have to be waterproofed from various moisture intrusions.   Consideration will also have to be given to areas where pipes, wires, and other such items pass through an otherwise waterproofed structure.

Waterproofing such an area can include various methods like drainage layers and waterproofing membranes.  The membrane needs to be protected to keep it from being damaged by any further construction that may take place above the plaza.  Knowing how to handle areas in which horizontal waterproofing meets other above or below grade waterproofing methods is also an important aspect.
