Metal Panels and Sealants

Metal Panels and Sealants

Different types of materials can be used as wall cladding for buildings in Los Angeles.  Each type of material can bring a different characteristic to the building in question.  One such material is metal.  A variety of different metal panels can be used for such a wall cladding application.  One of the most common metals used in wall paneling is aluminum because it tends to be cheaper, tends to resist corrosion, and is durable.  However, panels can also be made of other metals such as steel, stainless steel, copper, and composite materials.  Whatever type of material is chosen, the type of joint and joint sealant should be chosen to match the application.

A building that uses metal panels may or may not be sealed depending upon its design.  A barrier design requires joints to be sealed while a rain screen or drainage design does not.  Should the joint require sealant, one should be chosen that will stand up to metal’s unique properties.  For one, thermal expansion and contraction should be accounted for.  An inappropriate sealant choice may result in the sealant failing.  Consideration into maintaining the panels and joint sealant should also be taken.  Not only should the sealant be periodically replaced, but the panels should be cleaned on a regular basis.
