The Los Angeles sun has an interesting effect on various materials.  In general, materials will expand in the heat and contract when they cool off.  This is not a problem unless this movement is not accounted for.  In construction, various joints are used to accommodate for this movement.  But what about deck coatings?  Do they allow for the movement associated with the sun’s heat?  Yes!  Elastomeric coatings move with the surfaces it is designed to protect without being damaged.  This way, the coating can continue to offer protection even in the hot sun.

Elastomeric coatings can be used in a variety of ways.  For instance, it can be used as an air and moisture barrier for metal panels.  Many times, it is also used for pedestrian traffic coating.  However it is used, the coating must be applied properly and it must remain properly maintained.  Failure to do so may result in coating failure and damage to the structure it is designed to protect.  It is also wise to contact a professional when trying to decide which coating will be right for a certain application.  They will be able to explain the various coatings’ benefits and drawbacks so the appropriate coating can be chosen for the structure that needs protecting.
